Alphabet Soup

There are so many protocols and communication languages, who can keep up? I can't keep track of DMX, DMX2, RDM, ACN, NET2, ShowNet, ColorNet, ArtNet, FartNet, NextNet, DumbNet, SmartNet, AAARGH!

Fortunately the nice folks at Enlightenment, a UK lighting distributor, have a fantastic tech support section that explains all these communications protocols in an easy-to-understand format (even if it is written in Brit :) ). Follow this link to get to their main site, then click the tech support link on the left side of the page and click through their different types of cool explanations for AMX, DMX, RDM, ACN and everything else. It even made sense to me!

Next up we'll talk about new products that hit the floor at the recent USITT conference in Louisville, KY last week.

Hi there and welcome to Go Lights, your latest source for news on the lighting industry and all the cool toys we get to use.

First, a little background. I work in the lighting industry and it's in my best interests and the interests of my continued employment to keep the sum total of your knowledge of me to that level. If I can retain some sense of anonymity, I can continue to bring you my unvarnished opinions of the newest technology, products, projects and industry goings-on. If I come right out and tell you who I am, various manufacturers and dealers could get upset about things I blog here and that wouldn't be good for my longevity. I'm just a little fish swimming in a big industry ocean, and I'll try to shoot straight for you. Not sure what's to come, but we've had a lot of great new products come out in the last year or so, and I'll talk about them as I come.

But please, let me know you're here. I'd love to see some comments so that I know I'm not just a light in the darkness, as it were.

We'll get cranking soon, right now we're at places.
